Two days to go before the latest incarnation of Pro Evolution Soccer hits the shelves. For me, last year’s PES 6 was a bit of a disappointment – a little too fast, a little too arcade-like. I’m hoping for better this time around.

PES mark 7, or PES 2008 as it will be known, promises the most intelligent game play yet with all new ‘Teamvision’ allowing players to ‘learn and adapt’ to tactical style. But then don’t they say that every year?

PES 5 was an excellent game but Konami still felt the need to make a few cursory changes for the 6th edition, most of which were to its detriment. Game play was made marginally faster, dribbling easier, tackling harder and attacking free-kicks almost impossible to score from (directly or indirectly). PES 6 was still a very good game, but tweaked in all the wrong areas.

For some reason Konami never bother improving any of the really ropey bits of Pro. The graphics are still a little rough around the edges, whilst the overall presentation (menus, commentary) has been rubbish for years.

The only reason the FIFA franchise still exists is because Pro looks and sounds like is should be rubbish. The FIFA games are flash and brash, but ultimately play like computer games – PES plays like real football, or at least as close as press buttons on a computer can get.

Interestingly the latest version of Pro will be out on both PS2 and PS3 consoles. Last time this happened, the difference between the PS1 and PS2 versions of PES2 was massive so it would seem likely that there will be an equally large variation between the two versions of PES 2008. Having said that, the new Pro will have to be pretty good to convince me to buy a PS3 – £350 is a lot of money for a games console.

If they want me to pay that much just to play a football game, they’re at least going to have to put Ipswich on it – and not in that half hearted way FIFA do. Full facial detail, accurate stats the lot, then I’d pay.

  1. Played both the PS2 and the 360 versions last night and the ps2 version is nothing more than an upgrade im afriad. New commentary and Sunderland, Birmingham and Derby! The 360 version on the other hand is a superb game and looks far better than last years effort. (good blog by the way, keep up the good work and ive added it to my blogroll!)

  2. Thanks for the heads up. Will definitely avoid shelling out £25 for the PS2 version.

  3. Have you played the new FIFA? ive heard good things about the ps2 version. I agree with you, i get the feeling the ps2 releases are becoming like the ps1 games once the ps2 had launched – afterthoughts. Impressed with your 18,000 hits, any tips?

  4. I haven’t played FIFA yet. I played the last one on PS2 and was quite impressed. Not a bad game these days.

As for hits, you’ll soon be up to 18000 by the looks of things. People love reading about football so you should get plenty of interest.

I see you are an Exeter fan. Your lot come down to my local side Histon this week.

  5. Yeah its going well, just a case of keeping it updated and hoping people start adding me to their blogroll etc.

Should be a good game, we just beat Stevenage then lost 4-1 to burton, so a bit unpredictable to say the least! Histon are one place ahead of us so should be interesting!
